The four day North Carolina League of Municipalities "ignition!", CityVision 2015 Convention and Annual Business Meeting wound up with the President's Banquet & Inaugural Gala at the Benton Convention Center, Winston-Salem. For entertainment, Tyler Perry's Musical Director Ronnie Garrett and last year's hit band at the NCLM, "Party On The Moon's" leader, Dennis Smith, teamed up. Their creation is the high energy national act, "Jessie's Girls". After dinner conventioneers danced the night away to this 16 piece cover band that shares a choreographer with Beyonce. The City of Hickory held it's Patriots Day Ceremony on the square, downtown. It's a remembrance of the Americans killed by the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Guest Speaker was Retired FBI Special Agent and Hickory resident, Gary Swinkey. The Society of Broadcast Engineers, Chapter 45, Charlotte, held it's monthly meeting at the Cox Communications Transmitter Facility. It houses two Charlotte stations, WSOC-TV Channel 9 and WAXN-TV Channel 64. The Engineers had lunch in the "Breezeway". Of course everyone there knew that we weren't on the Front Porch or the Back Porch and just 4µs before we Burst. The food was very good! The Soldiers Reunion celebration in Newton, NC is believed to be the longest running patriotic celebration in the United States not based on a holiday. The tradition began in Newton on July 4, 1889, when Civil War veterans answered a statewide call for recognition of their wartime efforts and to receive their pensions. The gathering in Newton let to annual reunions, starting the popular patriotic Soldiers Reunion. Today, the celebration offers a variety of family friendly activities and events for veterans and the community to enjoy, many of which are centered around the iconic 1924 Courthouse Square in downtown Newton. The Society of Broadcast Engineers, Chapter 45, Charlotte, held it's annual dinner meeting at the Beasley Broadcast Group Studios. Telos Systems and Broadcast General Store sponsored the dinner. In Charlotte, Beasley Media operates: WPEG-FM 97.9 (Power 98); WKQC-FM (K104.7); WNKS-FM 95.1 (Kiss); WBAV-FM (V101.9); WSOC-FM 103.7; WBCN-AM 610 & WBCN-AM (Talk 1660). On Dec. 1, 2014, Beasley took over CBS Radios Charlotte stations, as part of a transaction with CBS Radio that also included station transfers in Tampa, Miami and Philadelphia. CBS had operated radio stations in Charlotte since 1997, but traded them to gain operations in larger cities where there was synergy with other broadcast properties. The 39th. Annual "Air Race Classic" zoomed in to Hickory Regional Airport as one of the way points in the Ladies only air race that was started by Amelia Airhart and was originally known as the power puff derby. Pilot and co pilot race from Fredericksburg, VA to Fairhope, AL to win a $5000 prize. It's a race from Washington's boyhood home to the Heart of Dixie by small private plane. Hickory, NC Mayor Rudy Wright hosted a check presentation that included Charlotte, WBTV's Anchor/Reporter Maureen O'Boyle, along with Carolina Cycle Challenge supporters. Levine Children's Hospital was the beneficiary of over sixty seven thousand dollars. Included in the list of givers are more than 700 cyclists, 400 volunteers & government and community leaders. The Society of Broadcast Engineers, Chapter 45, held their first meeting of the year at iHeartMEDIA's (formerly Clear Channel Communications) Charlotte Cluster. This months luncheon meeting was sponsored by nationally known Broadcast equipment dealer SCMS, Inc. of Charlotte. Featured Speaker was Larry Airey, Senior Trade Ally Outreach Representative from Duke Energy. Mr. Airey spoke about energy incentives for corporations. He gave us some outstanding & useful information to keep the power bill at it's lowest.
